Heavy-soiling staircase clean at a manufacturing site

A genuine example of assessment and thorough cleaning on a heavily used commercial staircase.
BeforeManufacturing-site staircase with heavy ingrained soiling before professional cleaning
AfterManufacturing-site staircase after George completed a professional deep clean

The staircase served a busy manufacturing site and had extensive, ingrained traffic soiling. The customer was considering replacement because the carpet appeared beyond saving.

George assessed the carpet and believed professional cleaning was worthwhile. Using equipment, preparation and chemistry selected for the carpet and its condition, he lifted the heavy contamination and restored a serviceable appearance.

  • Heavy soiling substantially reduced across the staircase
  • The existing carpet remained in use rather than being replaced at that point
  • The customer subsequently booked George for further work

About George

Why people trust George with their carpets

George does not use one routine regardless of what is on the floor. He assesses the fibre, construction, condition and soiling, then chooses the chemistry and method for the carpet in front of him.

That can take longer than a basic single-pass clean, and it will not always be the cheapest quotation. The price reflects the time allowed for assessment, preparation and treatment, with a fixed quotation agreed before work begins.

George’s work in stain removal, colour correction, dyeing and repair also helps him recognise problems that cleaning alone cannot fix. If the carpet has permanent colour loss, chemical damage or physical damage, he will explain the appropriate route honestly.

The difference

What makes a thorough carpet clean different

The result depends heavily on assessment, preparation and the method used—not simply passing an extraction tool over the carpet.

Limited preparation

A basic single-pass process may

  • Introduce moisture before thoroughly reducing dry soil
  • Allow little dwell time for the chemistry to work
  • Use limited rinsing or residue control
  • Apply a similar routine to very different carpets

Assessment-led

George’s professional approach

  • Begins with a thorough professional pre-vacuum
  • Identifies fibre, construction and condition first
  • Matches chemistry and allows appropriate dwell time
  • Selects hot-water extraction or another method according to suitability

What cleaning addresses

Six common types of carpet soiling

Improvement still depends on the fibre, age, condition, previous treatments and whether a mark is soiling or permanent damage.

Traffic soiling and dry soil

Dust and grit become embedded through everyday foot traffic. Pre-vacuuming and an appropriate cleaning method help remove accumulated soil from the pile.

Oily and greasy soiling

Tracked-in oils can bond strongly to synthetic fibres and may need a specialist fibre-safe pre-treatment before extraction.

Pet hair and dander

Hair, dander and deposits can accumulate within the pile. Thorough preparation and extraction help remove what domestic maintenance has left behind.

Spills and organic residue

Food debris, drink residue and other organic contamination may respond to matched pre-treatment and extraction.

General household stains

Tea, coffee, food and mild drink spills may improve during the clean. Older or stubborn marks may need targeted specialist treatment.

Previous cleaning residue

Excess or unsuitable chemistry can build up in the pile. Appropriate rinsing and residue control give the carpet a better finish.

The value

What you are paying for in a professional deep clean

The difference in price reflects the assessment, preparation and treatment being carried out—not a more expensive label for the same clean.

Basic service

Lower-cost single-pass process

  • Less time may be allowed for assessment and preparation
  • The method may not suit every fibre or soiling level
  • Residue management may be limited
  • Price reflects a shorter appointment

Assessment-led service

Professional Deep Clean

Free assessment · Fixed quotation
  • Fibre identification and matched chemistry
  • Pre-treatment, dwell time and agitation where appropriate
  • A method selected for the individual carpet
  • Honest assessment of stains and damage before work begins

Thorough extraction and an appropriate rinse also help reduce cleaning residue and the risk of rapid re-soiling. No particular interval or result is guaranteed because future use and maintenance still matter.

The process

Six stages. No shortcuts.

These six stages apply to hot-water extraction. A low-moisture or other method may better suit your carpet.

Because George also works in specialist stain removal, colour correction, carpet dyeing and repairs, he assesses each carpet as a whole rather than assuming every problem can be cleaned away.

George demonstrating the six-stage professional carpet-cleaning process
Select any numbered stage to open its full explanation below.
1Thorough Pre-Vacuum

The entire area is dry-vacuumed with professional equipment to lift as much dry soil and loose debris as practical before moisture is introduced.

Dry soil is easier to remove before it becomes wet, giving every later stage a cleaner base to work from.

2Fibre & Condition Identification

George identifies the carpet fibre—such as wool, polypropylene, polyamide/nylon, polyester or a blend—and assesses its construction and condition before selecting a method.

Chemistry, temperature and agitation are then matched to the actual carpet. WoolSafe-approved products are available for wool and wool-rich carpets where appropriate.

3Fibre-Appropriate Pre-Treatment

Professional cleaning chemistry is selected for the fibre and the soiling present, applied evenly and allowed suitable dwell time.

This gives the pre-treatment time to loosen the bond between soiling and fibre before extraction begins.

4Agitation Where Appropriate

Where suitable, mechanical agitation works the pre-treatment through the pile and helps loosen embedded contamination. A counter-rotating brush may be used where the carpet’s construction and condition allow.

Agitation is selected for the individual carpet rather than applied as an automatic stage in exactly the same way every time.

5Hot Water Extraction Where Appropriate

Hot water is injected into the pile while a powerful vacuum draws it back out, carrying loosened soiling with it. George works methodically with overlapping passes and controls temperature according to the fibre.

Hot water extraction is not the right method for every carpet. A low-moisture or alternative fibre-appropriate method is selected when better suited to the fibre, construction or condition.

6Fibre-Appropriate Rinse & Groom

An appropriate rinse is used where required to help manage cleaning residue and return the carpet towards a fibre-appropriate pH. The pile is then groomed to encourage an even finish and drying pattern.

How long the carpet stays clean afterwards also depends on traffic, pets, footwear, maintenance and household use.

Investment

What affects the cost of a deep carpet clean?

Your fixed quotation reflects the rooms, carpet and preparation needed.

Room size and number of rooms

The total area affects the time, access, preparation and materials required.

Soiling level and condition

A lightly used room and a high-traffic family area require different levels of preparation and treatment.

Carpet fibre and construction

Wool, synthetics, blends, woven carpets and different backings require appropriate products and methods.

Targeted stain treatment

Specific spots such as wine, pet contamination or ink may require additional assessment and specialist treatment.

Hall, stairs and landing

Every tread must be worked individually, and access can make stair cleaning more labour-intensive than an open room.

Optional protection

A suitable carpet protector can be quoted after cleaning where appropriate to help with future maintenance.

How pricing works

Send clear photographs of the rooms and any particular marks. George assesses likely condition and soiling, provides an initial fixed quotation, then confirms fibre and treatment suitability on site before cleaning. No call-out charge across Kent.

Honest expectations

What to expect before, during and after cleaning

Allow time for a thorough process

Timing depends on size, fibre, condition, soiling and the method selected. George explains the likely duration with the quotation.

Expect some drying time

Drying varies with the carpet, method and ventilation. Clean footwear and extra care beside hard floors are advised while it remains damp.

Clear small items where practical

George can work around furniture, but clear floor space gives better access. Heavy items such as wardrobes normally remain in place.

Some marks may remain

Cleaning removes soiling, not permanent colour change or physical damage. George explains likely limitations from your photographs.

Honest limits

When deep cleaning is not the right answer

Some carpet problems are not cleaning problems. George will explain this from your photographs wherever possible, before arranging a visit.

Bleach or chemical damage

Permanent colour loss needs colour correction or bleach-spot repair rather than more cleaning.

Bleach-spot repair →

Permanent stains and dye damage

Some wine, ink, food dye and chemically altered marks require targeted specialist treatment.

Specialist stain removal →

Sun fading and colour loss

Cleaning removes soiling; it cannot restore colour lost through sunlight, wear or ageing.

Colour restoration →

Physical damage

Burns, tears, missing pile and contained damage may require donor carpet and a patch repair.

Common questions

Questions about professional carpet cleaning

Straight answers about methods, wool carpets, drying, stains, preparation, frequency and price.
What is the difference between deep carpet cleaning and regular carpet cleaning?

A basic single-pass clean may apply a cleaning solution and extract it without the additional assessment and preparation involved in a more thorough process. George selects a fibre-appropriate method following an assessment. Where hot water extraction is suitable, he follows a structured six-stage process with an appropriate rinse to help reduce residue and the risk of rapid re-soiling.

Why does carpet get dirty again quickly after cleaning?

Two common causes are residue and wicking. Inadequate extraction can leave detergent residue that attracts dirt from foot traffic, while deeper soiling may draw back towards the surface as the carpet dries. Thorough extraction and an appropriate rinse help reduce these risks, although traffic, pets, footwear and household use also affect how long a carpet stays clean.

How long does professional carpet cleaning take?

Timing depends on room size, condition, fibre type, soiling and the treatment required. A thorough, individually selected process generally takes longer than a basic single-pass clean because proper time is allowed for assessment, preparation and treatment. George explains what to expect with the quotation.

How long will my carpet take to dry?

Drying times vary with the carpet, its condition, ventilation and the cleaning method used. Carpets can normally be walked on carefully while damp using clean footwear. Extra caution is needed when stepping from damp carpet onto hard flooring, and George provides job-specific drying advice.

Is professional carpet cleaning safe for wool carpets?

Yes, when the correct products and methods are used. Wool requires a more considered approach than many synthetic carpets. George identifies the fibre and selects appropriate chemistry, temperature and method. WoolSafe-approved cleaning products and suitable protection treatments are available where appropriate.

Can carpet cleaning remove all stains?

No. Deep cleaning removes general soiling, embedded dirt and many common stains, but it cannot reverse permanent colour damage, burns or missing pile. Bleach damage, strong dye stains and some heat-set or chemically altered marks may need specialist stain treatment, colour correction or repair instead.

Should I vacuum before the carpet cleaner arrives?

You do not need to. Thorough professional pre-vacuuming is included as the first stage, lifting dry soil and loose debris before moisture is introduced. Clearing small items from the floor is more useful preparation where practical.

How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?

Many households choose professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months, while homes with pets, children or high foot traffic may benefit from cleaning around every 6 to 12 months. The right interval depends on use, fibre, appearance and any manufacturer or warranty guidance.

Why can professional carpet cleaning prices vary so much?

Quotes can reflect very different levels of preparation and treatment. George prices according to the carpet, its condition and the work required rather than using a one-size-fits-all room price. You receive a fixed quotation before work begins, with no call-out charge across Kent.
