Cleaning and odour neutralisation at short notice

Genuine customer job completed by George

The customer contacted George after her elderly dog had caused visible staining on the sofa and left an odour. George attended at short notice, assessed the upholstery and cleaned the sofas.

Alongside the cleaning, George used a specialist treatment selected to neutralise the odour rather than cover it with a masking fragrance. The customer was delighted with the result and subsequently left a glowing Google review.

About George

Why upholstery gets the same careful approach

Upholstery is not simply a smaller carpet. The visible fabric, internal fillings, construction, backing and trims can each respond differently to moisture, heat, agitation and cleaning products.

George is professionally trained in upholstery inspection and cleaning methods. He assesses every enquiry personally, checks the item on site and selects a process from what the fabric and construction actually support.

Photographs allow an initial quotation. If the on-site inspection reveals a material difference, George explains it and agrees any change before work begins. If cleaning is unsuitable or the likely benefit does not justify the risk, he will say so.

Why assessment comes first

Upholstery cannot all be cleaned the same way

A label can be useful, but it does not replace inspecting and testing the complete item. Labels may be missing, incomplete or apply only to one material.

What can vary between items

  • Fibre and fabricNatural, synthetic and blended fibres can respond differently to moisture, heat, agitation and cleaning products.
  • Dye and colour stabilitySome dyes can move, bleed or change when exposed to moisture or unsuitable chemistry.
  • Construction and fillingsInternal fillings, backing and how the item is assembled affect moisture tolerance and drying.
  • Trims, piping and buttonsDecorative details may be more sensitive than the main fabric or may restrict the cleaning method.
  • History and existing conditionPrevious products, wear, fading, staining and physical damage influence what can safely and usefully be done.

How George approaches it

  • Identify before cleaningThe visible fabric and likely fibre are considered before a wider treatment is selected.
  • Inspect the whole itemGeorge checks construction, fillings, backing, trims and existing damage—not only the surface fabric.
  • Test suitability and colourAppropriate discreet tests help indicate how the fabric and dyes respond before work proceeds.
  • Control chemistry and moistureThe method is adapted to the individual item rather than using one default process everywhere.
  • Set honest expectationsLikely stain limitations, existing wear and realistic drying guidance are discussed before or during the visit.

What can be cleaned

Upholstery George can assess

These are common enquiry types, not a promise that every example is suitable for the same treatment.

Sofas

Two-seat, three-seat and corner sofas, with each section and cushion assessed before the method is confirmed.

Armchairs

Individual armchairs and matching suite chairs, considered according to their own fabric, construction and condition.

Dining chairs

Upholstered seats and backs, including sets where use and soiling may vary from one chair to another.

Footstools and ottomans

Fixed and storage footstools assessed for fabric, internal construction and accessible surfaces.

Fabric headboards

Upholstered headboards considered following colourfastness, condition and access checks.

Loose and fixed cushions

Seat, back and scatter cushions assessed with their covers, fillings and the main piece of furniture.

Suitability

Not every item is suitable for the same process

Some fabrics respond well to cleaning while others carry greater risk. Assessment determines how—or whether—the work should proceed.

Photographs first

Full-item and close-up photographs help George understand the furniture and prepare an initial quotation.

Fabric and construction inspection

The cover, fillings, backing, piping, buttons and accessible construction details are checked on site.

Colourfastness and response testing

Discreet testing is carried out where appropriate before products or moisture are used more widely.

Existing wear recorded

Fading, abrasion, weakened fabric, marks and previous damage are identified so they are not mistaken for cleaning results.

Method selected for the item

A controlled wet-cleaning, low-moisture or other suitable approach is chosen from what the assessment supports.

Adjusted or declined where necessary

If the item presents an unacceptable risk, George will change the proposed scope or advise against cleaning.

The process

Assessment-led, not identical every time

Every visit follows a broadly consistent structure, but the products, moisture and cleaning method are decided by the individual item.
1

Photo assessment

Send photographs of the complete item, cushions, labels where available and the areas that concern you.

2

On-site inspection and testing

George checks the fabric, construction, condition and likely response before confirming how to proceed.

3

Dry-soil removal

Loose dust, hair and dry particulate matter are removed where appropriate before wet or low-moisture treatment.

4

Fabric-appropriate preparation

Products and preparation are chosen according to the fabric, construction and type of soiling present.

5

Controlled cleaning

Moisture, chemistry and agitation are controlled within the limits supported by the individual item.

6

Finishing and drying guidance

The upholstery is checked and finished appropriately, followed by item-specific ventilation and drying advice.

Investment

What affects the cost of upholstery cleaning?

Upholstery is priced following assessment rather than from one flat rate for every item.

Size and number of items

A single armchair is a different scope from a corner sofa, a suite or several dining chairs.

Cushion configuration

The number of loose and fixed cushions, plus which surfaces require cleaning, affects the time involved.

Fabric and construction

Some materials require more testing, controlled moisture or detailed handling than others.

Condition and soiling

Heavier soiling, pet hair and long-term use generally require more preparation than regular maintenance cleaning.

Staining or specialist treatment

Specific marks or contamination may require targeted work and a more cautious expected outcome.

Access and location

Furniture position, parking, stairs and practical access are considered when confirming the visit and quotation.

How pricing works

Send photographs of the complete items and any specific concerns. George provides an initial quotation, then confirms suitability and the final scope on site before work begins. No call-out charge across Kent.

Honest expectations

What cleaning can—and cannot—change

The assessment is intended to separate removable soiling from staining, fading, wear and structural damage before expectations are agreed.

Soiling is different from damage

Cleaning is intended to remove suitable soiling. It cannot rebuild worn fabric, repair weakened seams or reverse physical damage.

Some stains are permanent change

A mark may have altered the fibre or dye rather than remaining removable contamination. No stain result is guaranteed.

Fading and pile wear remain

Sun fading, abrasion and pile distortion can look different once soil is removed, but cleaning does not reverse them.

Odours can reach internal materials

If contamination has penetrated the fillings, surface cleaning may improve the item without completely resolving the source.

Common questions

Questions about specialist upholstery cleaning

Straight answers about fabrics, testing, stains, drying, preparation, pricing and Kent coverage.
Do you clean every type of upholstery fabric?

No. Different fibres, dyes, fillings, backing materials and trims respond differently to moisture and cleaning products. George inspects and tests the item before deciding whether cleaning is appropriate, and will explain honestly if the risk is too high or a proposed method is unsuitable.

How do you decide which cleaning method to use?

George considers the visible fabric, construction, fillings, trims, existing wear and any previous treatment, then carries out appropriate suitability and colourfastness testing. Depending on what that shows, the item may be cleaned by hot water extraction, a controlled low-moisture approach or another suitable method—or cleaning may be declined.

Can you remove every stain?

No responsible cleaner can promise removal of every stain. General soiling and some marks may respond well, but contamination can permanently change a fabric or its dye. George explains the likely limitation wherever possible and distinguishes removable soiling from colour loss, wear or permanent damage.

How long will my sofa take to dry?

Drying time depends on the fabric, fillings, cleaning method, amount of moisture, room temperature and ventilation. George controls moisture according to the item and gives realistic drying and ventilation guidance after the work. No single drying time applies to every sofa or chair.

Do I need to prepare the furniture before you arrive?

Remove throws, blankets and personal items, and make reasonable space around the furniture. Leave loose cushions available so George can inspect them with the main item. Any additional preparation or access requirement will be explained when the visit is arranged.

Can you clean fixed and removable cushions?

Both fixed and loose cushions can often be considered. The appropriate method depends on their fabric, filling, construction and condition, so each cushion is included in the inspection rather than assumed suitable from a photograph alone.

Can my carpets and upholstery be cleaned during the same visit?

Often, yes. Tell George about both when you enquire and include photographs of the carpets and upholstery. He can assess the combined work and confirm whether it can reasonably be completed during one appointment.

How much does upholstery cleaning cost?

Pricing depends on the size and number of items, cushion configuration, fabric and construction, condition, soiling, staining, access and the treatment required. Photographs allow George to provide an initial quotation, with suitability and the final scope confirmed on site before work begins.

Which parts of Kent do you cover?

George is based in Sittingbourne and offers upholstery cleaning across Kent, with no call-out charge across the county. Send your location with the photographs and he will confirm availability for your area.

What happens if my upholstery is not suitable for cleaning?

George will explain why the proposed work is unsuitable or too risky and will not simply proceed. This may happen where testing indicates colour movement, the fabric or filling is unstable, existing damage could worsen, or the likely improvement would not justify the risk or cost.
